1 dead, 1 injured as truck overshoots bend on NLEx
MANILA, Philippines — A passenger in a truck was killed while the driver was injured after the vehicle hit steel railings and concrete posts on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) on Tuesday.
A report from the Valenzuela City police said that driver Juan Riva, 53, and Kent Brillantres, 30, were on their way to Paso de Blas in Valenzuela City when the Fuso rebuilt truck overshot a turn and leaned to the left, causing it to fall into an embankment.
Due to the impact, the victims were pinned between a guard rail and the tractor head.
Brillantres was declared dead on arrival at Valenzuela Medical Center, while Riva was still recovering from his injuries.
Staff Sgt. Marvin Umayam of the city’s Vehicle Traffic Investigation Unit said the victim’s family was not planning on pressing charges against Riva since the victims were cousins.
Umayam added that they were not able to monitor the speed at which the vehicle was traveling, but clarified that Riva was not under the influence of alcohol. —Meg Adonis
