Duterte appoints ex-LP stalwart Sonny Belmonte as special envoy to Japan
MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former House Speaker and former Liberal Party (LP) stalwart Feliciano Belmonte as Special Envoy of the President to Japan for Trade and Market Access.
Duterte appointed Belmonte on October 15 but his appointment paper was released only on Wednesday.
Belmonte served as House Speaker during the terms of former presidents Benigno Aquino III and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Belmonte was a vice chairman of the LP during the Aquino administration.
In 2018, the Belmonte patriarch resigned from the LP and retired from politics. /muf
