MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday urged the management of Light Rail Transit (LRT) 2 to step up their services after a burning power rectifier paralyzed operations last week and affected thousands of commuters.

“I want them to improve their services,” Palace Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a Palace briefing when sought for comment on the issue of the LRT-2.

Panelo lamented how the LRT-2 management cannot find solutions to address the repeated halt of operations.

“Kasi kung ang problema lang naman ang palaging nahihinto yung operation, ibig sabihin something must be wrong. Bakit hindi nila nagagawan ng paraan?” Panelo said.

(If the only problem is the operation that is consistently halted, it means there must be something wrong. Why can’t they find a solution to that?)

“Ang solusyon dun there should be improvement in the LRT kung anong problema nila. Why is it bogging down? So ibig sabihin maintenance ang problema. You’re not maintaining it properly. So I think the management of the LRT should know how to respond to this,” he added.

(The solution is that there should be an improvement in the LRT by recognizing its problem. Why is it bogging down? This means there is problem in its maintenance. You’re not maintaining it properly. So I think the management of the LRT should know how to respond to this.)

A power rectifier tripped and caught fire in between Santolan and Katipunan stations of the LRT-2 on Thursday last week causing it to suspend operations over the weekend until Monday.

But the LRT-2 resumed Tuesday its partial operations between Cubao to Recto stations and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the LRT Authority (LRTA) said Santolan, Katipunan and Anonas stations will shut down for about nine months to give way to repairs and replacement of ruined parts. /jpv
