Man jumps off ro-ro vessel, drowns

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – A 23-year-old man drowned when he jumped off a TriStar roll on-roll off vessel, 2.1 nautical miles from the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. Port in Bacolod City, at 11:40 a.m. Christmas Day.

Lt. Commander Dominador Senador, Bacolod Coast Guard head, on Monday identified the fatality as Manuel Quilliano Jr. of Dumanagas, Iloilo.

Witnesses said he jumped off the vessel but probers have not determined his motive for killing himself, Senador said.

Even Quillano’s family did not know why he jumped, he added.

The vessel stopped so crew members could rescue Quillano, he said. When he was rescued, he was unconscious and still had a pulse. However, Quillano was declared dead at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City at 1:30 p.m. of the same day, Senador added.
