P5,000 annual teaching supplies allowance bill advances

MANILA, Philippines – A bill granting an annual P5,000 teaching supplies allowance for public elementary teachers, has been approved by a joint Senate panel.

The approval of Senate Bill No. 1092 was contained in Committee Report No. 14 prepared by the committees on civil service, basic education, ways and means, and finance.

It was signed by 20 senators.

Once signed into law, a public elementary school teacher would receive a P5,000 teaching supplies allowance per school year.

Funds would be sourced from the budget of the Department of   Education  (P2, 500 from its current appropriation and another P2,500 from its available funds or savings) in the first year of its implementation.

“Thereafter, the amount of  P5,000 per teacher per school year shall be  included in the DepEd budget for the Teaching Supplies Allowance under the General Appropriations Act,” the bill stated.

The granting of the said allowance, however, would be limited only to teachers, who “are engaged in actual teaching in public basic education.”

The measure has been submitted for plenary debates. /gsg
