House panel OKs committee report postponing 2020 barangay, SK polls
MANILA, Philippines — The House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms on Monday approved its committee report on bills postponing the 2020 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to the second Monday of May 2023.
It was Cavite 4th District Rep. Elpidio Barazaga Jr. who moved for the approval of the committee report, and was seconded by Cagayan de Oro City 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez.
The committee report, or the substitute bill, will then be transmitted to the plenary for deliberations.
Under the measure, the local elections after the 2023 polls would be held every three years.
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano earlier said the House of Representatives will push for around P10-billion worth of realignments in the proposed P4.1 trillion 2020 national budget which would postpone the barangay elections in 2020 and some right-of-way claims of the government, among others.
For its part, the Senate has approved on second reading its counterpart measure postponing the barangay and SK elections on December 2022. /je
