UP Diliman imposes preventive suspension vs students tagged in frat hazing

MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman announced the preventive suspension of students involved in the alleged hazing ritual in the Sigma Rho Fraternity, saying UP plans to file charges against the suspects.

“Following leads from social media posts, we are investigating allegations of hazing by the Sigma Rho Fraternity. We have placed suspects on preventive suspension and will file formal charges where there is evidence to support such move,” UP Diliman’s Office of the Chancellor said in a statement on Friday.

A statement from UP Diliman University Student Council issued on Thursday said they discovered a tweet from an anonymous Twitter account showing series of photos and screenshots about the suspected hazing incident.

“One of the photos showed an individual who has undergone an alleged hazing incident led by members of UP Sigma Rho Fraternity,” read the statement.

After learning the incident, UP Diliman said they “condemn all forms of violence and all acts that covertly and blatantly disregard the rule of law.”

The university also asked students, faculty, and staff to report any violation of anti-hazing law provisions in the Code of Student Conduct.

The recent incident of hazing in the country involved Philippine Military Academy Cadet Darwin Dormitorio, who died due to maltreatment from the hands of his fellow cadets. /jpv
