SAN PEDRO CITY — A former police officer and two other convicts turned themselves in to authorities in Cavite and Rizal, in accordance with President Duterte’s surrender order to freed prisoners.
A report from the regional police office on Saturday said the 63-year-old retired policeman surrendered to members of the Cavite intelligence group in Imus City on Friday morning.
It was not immediately clear in the police report which criminal case the retired policeman was earlier detained for, but it said that he was released from prison just last February 22.
The report also said that he was actually released on parole and was not in the list of prisoners freed through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA).
Duterte ordered prisoners released through the GCTA to yield as the government reviewed the said law.
Still in Cavite, another convict also surrendered Friday morning in Naic town. He was convicted of homicide and frustrated homicide and was released on July 7, 2017.
In Antipolo City, Rizal, another convict released from the Iwahig penal colony in Palawan province in April 2017, turned himself in to the police on Friday.
The Department of Justice said that as of Friday, 2,009 convicts across the country had surrendered, heeding Duterte’s order. Maricar Cinco/lzb
