MANILA, Philippines — Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon agrees that the law diminishing Department of Justice’s (DOJ) control over the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) should be amended.

In an interview at AM radio station DWIZ, Drilon even urged Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to help create a bill to amend the Bureau of Corrections Act of 2013.

Earlier, Guevarra said the law only allows DOJ to exercise “administrative supervision” over BuCor.

Drilon then vowed to work for a law that would again give the DOJ more power over BuCor.

Drilon noted that the DOJ also had little control over the Office of the Solicitor General and National Bureau of Investigation.

BuCor became the focus of a Senate probe because of its release of almost 2,000 heinous crime convicts were released under the Good Conduct Time Allowance law.
