MANILA, Philippines — The results of the examination of ballots from three pilot provinces cited by former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in his electoral protest against Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo has been submitted to the Supreme Court sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).
“As a result, the member-in-charge of the case, Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin S. Caguioa submitted yesterday [Monday], a report to the Tribunal [PET] on the results of the said revision of ballots,” lawyer Brian Keith Hosaka, the high court’s public information chief, said at a press conference.
“However, the tribunal has not taken any action yet on the said report of Justice Caguioa,” he added.
In his electoral protest, Marcos said he could prove that irregularities marred the conduct of the 2016 polls in the said provinces.
Romulo Macalintal, legal counsel for Robredo, said the report would serve as determining factor on the next step of the protest — whether there would be a need to also look at the other provinces that are the subject of the protest or if the PET would dismiss the case.
“Kung walang makitang pagbabago o substantial recovery, talagan idi-dismiss ng Korte Suprema ang kanilang protesta. Pero kung may makita naman na mayroong substantial recovery, itutuloy ang protesta,” Macalintal explained.
[If there is no change or substantial recovery, the Supreme Court will dismiss the protest. But if there was substantial recovery, the protest will continue.]
