Clash with NPA in Samar kills 2 soldiers, wounds 1
TACLOBAN CITY-Two soldiers were killed while another was wounded in a clash with New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas at a remote village in Calbayog City, Samar province on Friday (Aug. 23).
The remains of Lt. Geroe Jade Nicor and Cpl. Joelito Canico were brought to Camp Vicente Lukban, headquarters of the 8thInfantry Division based In Catbalogan City, the capital of Samar.
The wounded soldier, Cpl.Eric Portalio, was brought to the hospital inside the Army headquarters.
The soldiers, of the 43rd Infantry Battalion, were at the village of Olera in Calbayog when they encountered a group of NPA guerrillas past 7 a.m.
The gunfight led to the military casualties but a report of the regional police office in Eastern Visayas said the guerrillas also suffered casualties although their bodies have not been found. Soldiers recovered M-14 rifles supposedly used by the guerrillas./tsb
