On Aug. 5, 1621, 10 nuns from the Franciscan Order arrived in Manila to establish the first convent in the country, the Convento de Santa Clara.
Led by a Spanish nun, Mother Jeronima de la Asuncion, they founded the first convent in Intramuros, Manila.
After Mother Jeronima’s death in 1630, the St. Claire Monastery was moved from one place to another, until it was transferred to its present location in Katipunan, Quezon City, on Feb. 20, 1950. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
