MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has ordered the city’s school board to remove the names of politicians – including his – from school buildings in the city.

“Pinatatanggal ko lahat ng pangalan, ultimo ang pangalan ko at pangalan ng mga pulitiko, na nakapintura o nakakabit sa mga eskwelahan,” Moreno said in a press briefing after the meeting with the Manila School Board on Tuesday.

“Lahat ng mga naglalagay na pulitiko ng kanilang mga pangalan as if you are immortalizing yourself or as if it is your money, that is not your money. Pera yan ng taumbayan,” he added.

Moreno’s order takes effect “as soon as possible” and covers all public primary and secondary schools in Manila.

As for the graduation greetings of politicians, Moreno said they will be tolerated for as long as the streamers are placed outside of school premises.

Moreno also warned school officials not to ‘politicize’ schools.

“Huwag natin pulitikahin ang ating mga paaralan. Let’s leave politics to politicians, and our educational institutions to academicians,” he said. (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
