DILG: Isko Moreno must sustain reform programs in Manila until his term ends

MANILA, Philippines – Newly-elected Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso should maintain his program of reforms in the nation’s capital until his term ends, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said on Saturday.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said Moreno should also sustain the clearing of informal settlers from “esteros (creeks) and other danger zones” to make way for the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program.

“The City Government’s cooperation in the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program is crucial because some of the most heavily polluted waterways are in the City of Manila so we look forward to working with him closely in order to return Manila Bay to its pristine beauty as directed by President Duterte,” Año said in a statement.

Año also lauded Moreno for his strong political will in solving woes in Manila, noting the clean-up of major streets in Manila, waste management program and anti-gambling program.

“I’m pleased that in the first weeks of his administration, Mayor Isko has already shown that the challenges of the city are not insurmountable and can be addressed with political will and commitment,” the DILG Chief said.

Año also hoped that other local chief executives may follow Moreno’s example in showing “decisive leadership” and “bringing change in communities.”

He also reminded newly-elected local chief executives to attend the 2019 newly-elected officials program for LGUs on Monday (July 8) to help them create their first 100 days agenda.  (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
