9 nabbed for quarrying sand, gravel in north Cebu town
CEBU CITY — Nine persons were arrested after they were allegedly caught in the act of quarrying sand and gravel in Asturias town, north Cebu on Tuesday.
Police Major Stephen Amamag-id, chief of the Asturias Police Station, said they arrested the suspects based on an order by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
“The suspects were conducting quarry operations and so we arrested them,” the police official said in an interview.
Amamag-id said they saw three dump trucks full of sand and gravel.
“We found out that these do not have permits, hence illegal,” he said.
In a recent statement, the Cebu Provincial Police Office ordered all policemen to conduct checkpoints and surveillance operations in the towns and cities of the province after Garcia mandated them to stop all illegal quarry operations. (Editor: Leti Boniol)
