Labuga, Sabas bag MVP titles

TALISAY CITY’S ace setter Norvie Labuga and Mandaue’s star Genie Sabas capped off their stellar showing in this year’s Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup by going home with the Most Valuable Player trophies during the awarding ceremonies late Saturday night at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

Both Mandaue and Talisay repeated as champions in the women’s and men’s divisions, thanks to the hard work and dedication put forth largely by their MVPs.

Labuga was deemed as the men’s MVP while Sabas was named the women’s MVP. Sabas was also given another award in the Best Attacker trophy. The MVP in the grassroots division went the way of Mandaue’s Troy Aribal.

The best servers were Kent Tabanog of Moalboal (grassroots), Jonrey Sasing of Liloan (men’s) and Mandaue’s Kennete Garces (women’s). Garces was also awarded the best setter award while Clifford Cafe was deemed as best setter in the men’s and Avelina Vidas of Moalboal got the citation on the grassroots level.

Mandaue’s Amor Pepito was the women’s best libero while Jason Uy of Carcar was the men’s awardee. Roland Salingo was the grassroots level award winner. The defensive pillars were also awarded with Carcar’s Ken Abunda deemed as the men’s best blocker even as Fretzie Aligway got the same award for the women’s side. Yvan Gemino won the award for the grassroots level.

Catmon’s Wella Ortega won as best attacker on the grassroots level while Kenneth Bensig of Mandaue won the men’s citation. Lastly, the best import award went the way of Mandaue’s Joanne Bunag on the women’s side and Talisay’s Rhovyl Verayo. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
