MANILA, Philippines — Flights delays are expected at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) after a red lightning alert was raised on Tuesday evening.
The Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) said the weather bureau issued a red alert at 6:53 p.m.
This means that ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel will be temporarily suspended.
Miaa said a “prolonged lightning red alert may cause delays in flight operations.”
A red lightning alert is raised when lightning is prevalent in the area and may endanger personnel, passengers, and flight operations. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issue such warnings.
The Miaa assured the public that it is monitoring the situation for contingencies that may be required as a consequence of the alert.
“We seek the understanding of the air riding public in this regard. Safety of passengers, flights and airport workers remain paramount in airport operations,” Miaa said in a statement.
The red lightning alert was later downgraded to a yellow alert 7:28 p.m. and was completely lifted by 7:52 p.m.
Miaa has yet to release information as to flights that were delayed due to the lightning alerts.
Pagasa earlier said the low-pressure area (LPA) spotted east of the Philippines has intensified into a tropical depression and was locally named “Dodong.”

Though “Dodong” may not directly affect the country, it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, Pagasa said. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
