MANILA, Philippines — Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) General Manager Ed Monreal on Monday sought the cooperation of airline operators whenever the airport announces a red lightning alert.

A red lightning alert is issued as a safety precaution when lightning is prevalent in the area and may endanger personnel, passengers, and flight operations.

Ramp movement for both aircraft and ground personnel is suspended whenever a red lightning alert is announced.

“While we are duty bound to keep flights safe, we are also duty bound to protect the lives of airport personnel while at work, especially those working in areas where exposure to environmental hazards is greater,” Monreal said in a statement.

Issuance of the said alert also led to some flight cancellations. With this, Monreal appealed the public’s understanding when ramp operations are put on hold.

He also assured that the four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) are safe with its Lightning Protection System.
