Customs orders collection of ‘just’ fees, charges
MANILA, Philippines — Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero has signed an order listing the fees that may be collected by the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
Guerrero signed Customs Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 30-2019 on Tuesday following reports of individuals collecting “unjust” fees for the BOC.
“Due to the issue of unjust fees being charged by unscrupulous individuals allegedly in favor of BOC, all customs officials and employees entrusted with the collection of taxes, fees, and other imports are enjoined to strictly comply with the said order,” the BOC said in a statement.
Customs officials who are proven to make unauthorized collection or illegal imposition of fees included in the list will be held criminally and administratively liable.
“The said order will ensure collection of lawful fees and charges by customs employees and brokers,” the BOC said.
The bureau also cautioned importers against unscrupulous individuals who are not authorized to collect fees.
“Stakeholders and victims of such deceitful acts are also encouraged to report the incidents to the Office of the Commissioner. The Bureau of Customs does not and will never tolerate unjust practices in the agency,” the BOC said.
The order was released under the provisions of Republic Act No. 10863, otherwise known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
