DILG hails PNP for 10% drop in crime in a year

MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Eduardo Año hailed Philippine National Police for the lower crime incidence recorded in May 2019.

“Congratulations, PNP, for making our streets safer and making our people feel more secure. I urge you to continue your anti-crime initiatives with greater vigor and zeal,” Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said in a statement issued on Saturday.

Año noted a 10-percent decrease in crime incidence from 42,527 in May 2018 to 38,284 in May this year.

Citing PNP records, he also noted a 22.6-percent decrease in index crimes — from 7,421 in May 2018 to 5,744 in May 2019.

Index crimes include murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, carnapping, and cattle rustling.

Non-index crimes dropped by 7.31 percent — from 35,106 in May last year to 32,540 in May this year.

These were cases of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury, reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property, and violation of special laws.

Año also praised the PNP for cleansing its ranks of rogue police officers and personnel.

“I would like to commend the PNP for its internal cleansing program aimed to rid its ranks from misfits and scalawags. Napakalaki na ng naitutulong ng PNP sa hangarin nating maibalik muli ang tiwala at pagmamahal ng mga tao sa pamahalaan,” he said.
