A school district in Virginia, United States, has bought a food truck to provide its students free meals for the summer.
The Danville Public Schools made the decision to buy a food truck, wanting to try something creative during the school break, as per WSET on June 11. The initiative proved to be popular among students and parents alike, with over 600 meals served in just the first week of June.
“We did some research and this thing is on the rise, food trucks,” Phillip Gardner of Danville Public Schools said in the report. “Everybody loves them.
The meals are free for students, while adults are charged $3.65 (around P180).
“Their food is just so good,” said one student Atasia Day. “Some students don’t really have food to eat or nothing and I think it’s a good idea for that.”
The food truck also takes the load off of some parents who get to save on groceries and be relieved from the stress of getting meals for their kids.
“I have four children in my home and so it really helps,” said Amada Reaves “It helps that grocery bill. They are really good lunches and I think it’s a really awesome program.”
The school district receives assistance from the government to buy the meals, as per the report, while all the earnings from the meals are used to buy more.
“Our goal is to feed our kids,” said Gardner. “So whatever we can do to increase that throughout the year, the summer, the school year, we’re all for it.” Cody Cepeda /ra
