Ruth Hilliard, a resident from Halifax County, North Carolina, marked her 106th year last Wednesday, June 5.
Hilliard was born in 1913, and spent most of her life teaching children at school and church, as reported by ABC’s WTVD today, June 12. At her age now, she still encourages students to do well in their studies.
To commemorate Hilliard’s life, the North Carolina House of Representatives honored her with a certificate of special recognition.
Hilliard credits her faith in God for her long life. Her eyesight is no longer as good for reading anymore but she still makes an effort to recite Bible scriptures regularly, the report said.
The centenarian believes God is using her 106 years to show the value of the Bible verse Psalms 91:15-16, which she said is her favorite verse.
The psalm goes, “He will call upon me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble, I will rescue him and honor him. With a long life I will satisfy him, and let him see my salvation.” Hannah Mallorca/JB
