DAGUPAN CITY — A 6-year-old girl and her father were killed on Monday after a fire razed five houses in Aringay town, La Union province, police said on Tuesday.

Cyril Jane Estoril was trapped inside her grandfather’s house as the fire raged and efforts to save her failed, according to Police Maj. Daniel Banan, Aringay police chief.

Estoril’s father, Jeffrey Estoril, 36, died at 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday in a hospital in San Fernando City, La Union, where he was taken after suffering second-degree burns while trying to save his daughter.

Banan said the fire started in the kitchen of Jeffrey’s 85-year-old father-in-law in Barangay Sta. Rita East at 3:27 p.m.

The fire then quickly spread to the neighboring houses, which were mostly made of light materials. Firefighters extinguished the fire about 5 p.m. Gabriel Cardinoza (EditorLeti Boniol)
