MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday advised Pasig City Mayor-elect Vico Sotto to stay on course despite the hardships he would face once he had taken his seat.

“There will many hardships to go through. I hope you just stay on course,” Robredo said in Filipino in Naga City during the celebration of the 61st birth anniversary of her late husband, former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.

“There will many temptations, many shortcuts that will come, that he will go through. But I hope his focus will always be there,” Robredo added.

The 29-year-old Sotto previously expressed his support for Naga and even defended the city after it was tagged as a “hotbed” of illegal drugs.

“It really is a hotbed here!” Sotto tweeted in Filipino. “Hotbed of citizen empowerment and participation in governance!!!”

Robredo added that she, along with the co-workers of her late husband, had volunteered to seek guidance should he face any challenges on good governance.

“We’re just here,” Robredo assured. “Not just me but also the husband’s co-workers. We are volunteering in case he needs help from us, so he may learn from the lessons we have learned.”
