Manila village councilor killed by man in SUV

MANILA, Philippines — A barangay councilor was shot dead in Tondo, Manila, by a man who alighted from a sport utility vehicle on Tuesday morning.

The Manila Police District identified the victim as Kagawad Ernesto Sibug of Barangay 131 Zone 11.

He was about to get into his car when the gunman, who was in a parked black Toyota Fortuner without any license plate or conduction sticker, shot him.

The shooting happened on Beltran Street at 6:02 a.m. Sibug was rushed to Tondo General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead around 20 minutes later. —Aie Balagtas See

NPD policeman in hot water for beating up motorcycle riders

MANILA, Philippines — A policeman has been arrested for mauling two men in Novaliches, Quezon City, on Monday.

Brig. Gen. Joselito Esquivel Jr., Quezon City Police District director, said that Cpl. Omar Lopez, 31, of the Northern Police District and his companion, Ajan Tigas, would be charged with physical injuries in the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.

A police report said that the  victims, Marlon dela Cruz and Aljon Aromin, were on motorcycles when they passed by the suspects and uttered words that offended the latter.
