MANILA, Philippines — Selling “biko,” a traditional Filipino rice cake, was banned in Pasig City during the local campaign period, according to actor and comedian Vic Sotto.

“Alam mo pinagbawal ang pagbenta ng biko. Ganun ka-petty. Akala [ko] joke lang. Hindi, totoo pala,” Sotto was quoted as saying in an ABS-CBN report.

“Sabi ko nga eh, pag-upo ni Vico, makakakain na ulit ng biko, pwede na magbenta ulit ng biko sa Pasig (When Vico assumes post, people can sell biko again),” he added.

Sotto is the father of Vico Sotto, who was earlier proclaimed as the new mayor of Pasig City.

However, the same report quoted Pasig City Public Information Officer Catherine Ciubal as saying that there was no official ban on the selling of “biko” in the city.

The 29-year-old Sotto’s poll victory ended the reign of the Eusebio clan in the city for 27 years.

Data from the City Board of Canvassers (CBOC) showed that Sotto defeated incumbent Mayor Robert “Bobby” Eusebio with 206,226 votes.

“Ang laban na ‘to, hindi ko lang po ito laban, hindi lang po ito laban ng isang Vico o ng Sotto, pero laban po ito ng bawat isang Pasigueño na sumisigaw ng pagbabago,” Sotto told reporters after his proclamation on Tuesday afternoon.
