Soldier heading home for a holiday dies in road mishap

ZAMBOANGA CITY — A soldier heading home for a break was killed in a road accident in Naga town of Zamboanga Sibugay province early morning of Thursday, May 2, police said on Friday.

Sergeant Enerio Sergio Soriano, 34, who was assigned at the 18th Infantry Battalion based in Basilan province, was driving his motorcycle bound for his home in Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur when he collided with another motorcycle driven by 63-year-old Artemio Villapnia Barong.

Police Major Helen Galvez, the spokesperson of the Zamboanga Peninsula Police Regional Office, said Soriano, a resident of Kagawasan village in Pagadian City, was believed to have died on the spot but was declared dead at a medical facility in Naga.

Investigation showed that Soriano was driving along the main highway of Barangay Aguinaldo in Naga at 7:20 a.m. when he collided with Barong, a resident of Purok 5, Barangay Aguinaldo of Naga, who was coming from the opposite direction.

Soriano landed on the ground and hit a road-rail that caused his instantaneous death, the report said.

Villapania suffered injuries and was brought to the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital in Ipil for treatment.
