DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A total of 122 earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the municipality of General Luna in Surigao del Norte in a span of two days, three of which were felt as intensity 3 at the town proper, records from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed.
The series of tremors, all tectonic in origin, ranged from a low 1.6 magnitude to a high 5.5 magnitude, according to Phivolcs.
82 tremors on Friday
About 82 of these tremors were recorded on Friday, but only four of them were recorded to have intensities, or were felt on the ground.
The first of the four was recorded at 1:26 p.m. at 5.5 magnitude and felt as intensity 2 in Surigao City and Gingoog City.
The second occurred at 1:49 p.m. at 4.4 magnitude, which was felt as intensity 3 in General Luna; intensity 2 in the towns of Burgos and Dapa, Surigao del Norte; and intensity 1 in Surigao City.
The third came at 2:04 p.m. recorded at 5 magnitude, which was felt as intensity 3 in Juan Luna and Burgos towns; intensity 2 in Socorro, Surigao del Norte, and in San Jose, Dinagat Islands; and intensity 1 in Surigao City, Sison town in Surigao del Norte, and Loreto in Dinagat Islands.
The last hit at 4:04 p.m., which was recorded at 5.5 magnitude and felt as intensity 3 in General Luna, Burgos and Dapa towns in Surigao del Norte; intensity 2 in Socorro, Surigao del Norte, and Cagdianao and Libjo, both on Dinagat Islands; and intensity 1 in Surigao City and Sison town in Surigao del Norte, and in Loreto in Dinagat Islands.
5.5 magnitude
The 5.5-magnitude temblor recorded at 4:04 p.m. was located some 64 kilometers northeast of the town center of General Luna at a depth of 12 km, Phivolcs said.
On Saturday, Philvocs recorded at least 40 earthquakes in General Luna, the latest of which was at 12:29 p.m. at 2.4 magnitude.
The epicenter was located some 22 km southeast of the town center at a depth of 22 km, Phivolcs said.
There were no known intensities in the Saturday quakes. No damage to properties was also reported.
Earlier at 3 a.m. on Friday, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook San Nicolas town in Ilocos Norte.
It was recorded as intensity 4 in San Nicolas and in Sinait, Ilocos Sur; intensity 3 in Sarrat, Pasuquin and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; and intensity 2 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.
At 10:44 a.m. on Friday, a 4-magnitude tremor jolted northeast of Albuera, Leyte. It was felt as intensity 3 in Ormoc City.
