2 dead, 3 hurt as wayward truck rams vulcanizing shop in Quezon

LUCENA CITY — Two persons were killed and three others were injured after a wayward cargo truck crashed into a vulcanizing shop along the Maharlika Highway in Calauag town in Quezon province early Thursday, police said.

A report said a Mitsubishi Canter dropside truck being driven by Jojo Madrid was traversing the highway when its front tire burst and subsequently bumped the oncoming cargo truck being driven by Willam Villegas in Barangay (village) Bagong Silang around 4:30 a.m.

Villegas lost control of his vehicle that consequently crashed into a vulcanizing shop located at the left shoulder of the road.

The report said Evelyn Lerum, 47, who was inside the shop died on the spot after the truck pinned her down.

Both drivers and two other persons inside the shop, Jose Eugene Lerum, 53, and Prince Alfred Lerum, 3, suffered injuries and were taken to Saint Peter General Hospital at the town center.

Police said Jose later died while undergoing treatment.

The report did not specify the relationships of the victims.
