VP tells high school grads: Fight for weak
MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday reminded a batch of graduating senior high school students in Manila of their responsibility as the country’s future leaders, as she urged them to fight for the weak, the voiceless and the oppressed.
“Always remember that you are the next generation of doctors, lawyers, teachers, architects, policemen, soldiers, businessmen, journalists and public servants in our country,” Robredo said in a speech she delivered at the graduation rites of students from various schools under the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila Educational System.
“When that time comes, may you choose to serve faithfully. Choose to fight for the rights of the weak and the oppressed. Fight for those who are voiceless and protect the dignity of being a true Filipino,” the Vice President said.
Robredo reminded the graduates that change does not start from one leader, but must come from themselves.
“Let us not put the burden or the responsibility only on the leader. Change must start from within ourselves. This country needs not only one person to attain change, not only one but every one,” she added.
Robredo also shared inspiring stories of individuals featured in the Istorya ng Pag-asa program of the Office of the Vice President, including that of Ave Zurbito-Alba, a former househelp and janitress, who worked her way from being a court stenographer and law student to become a municipal trial court judge in Daraga, Albay.
The Vice President also recalled the story of Vejiel Velez, a member of the Ata tribe, who was bullied when she was young because of her complexion and curly hair. The young girl, however, persevered in her studies and eventually graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She now teaches in Bagac, Bataan.
“Use their stories to inspire you especially in times when you feel down. Take courage and strength from them who strived amid hardships and sacrifices,” Robredo told the graduates.
The Vice President also acknowledged the parents for their sacrifice.
