MANILA, Philippines — Former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay confirmed on Saturday that his long-time aide Monaliza “Monette” Bernardo passed away at the hospital barely a day after being shot by gunmen.
In his official Facebook page, Binay said Bernardo died on Friday night after being shot by unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen at 8:13 p.m. on Thursday in Makati.
“Kagabi pumanaw ang ating kaibigan, si Monette Bernardo. Monette succumbed last night to the gunshot wound she suffered when she was attacked by an unidentified assailant last Thursday,” Binay said.
“No words can describe this tragic loss. Monette was a kind, generous, and compassionate soul whose friendship I treasured and valued deeply,” he added.
According to police report from the Southern Police District, Bernardo, 44, was shot right in front of her apartment in barangay Olympia when she just arrived home from work.

Binay then expressed his grief following the passing of his executive assistant and extended the family’s condolences and prayers to the love ones of Monette.
“The sadness and pain we feel today is indescribable; but it is matched by our resolve to secure justice for Monette and her loved ones,” he said.
“Hindi ka namin malilimutan, Monette. We will not rest until those behind this tragedy are held accountable for this unforgivable crime,” he added.
Former Vice President Jejomar Binay already offered a P1-million reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the those behind the crime.
“Umaasa ako na mananaig ang katotohanan at katarungan, at makilala ang nasa likod ng karumaldumal na gawaing ito. Handa akong magbigay ng pabuya na P1 milyon para sa anumang impormasyon na magtuturo sa mga nasa likod ng krimen,” the former Vice President said in a statement on Friday. /jpv
