SAN PEDRO CITY, Philippines–The police identified the couple, who died in an explosion in Sto. Tomas, Batangas before noon on Monday.

Supt. Harold Depositar, Sto. Tomas police chief, named the fatalities as Joy Sorima and Jerwin Salazar.

The couple’s five-year-old child, Jorel Salazar,  is still undergoing treatment for blast injuries at the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.

Police said they found Jorel outside the family’s home, at the Madison Garden subdivision in Barangay San Roque, after the house blew up around 11am.

No one else was reported hurt as the house stood in a far corner of the subdivision, but glass windows of nearby three-storey building were shattered.

The building was empty at the time, police said.

Depositar said they found about “a thousand” blasting caps and rolls of fuse believed to be used as detonators.

“They’re like cable wires,” he said, which were similar to those normally used in quarrying and illegal fishing.

Police have yet to say if the couple was involved in these activities.
