Bolo-wielding amuck killed after hacking 2 in Quezon

LUCENA CITY, Philippines – A bolo-wielding man was shot dead in Quezon province on Saturday after he ran amuck and hacked two villagers, police said.

Chief Inspector Michael Encio, Atimonan police chief, identified the fatality as Edmerson Libot, 32, who allegedly ran amuck with a bolo in Barangay Inaclagan, Atimonan town, at about 11:30 a.m.

Libot allegedly hacked and wounded farmer Manuel Joven and village watchman Arnaldo Cañada, who tried to pacify him.

PO1 Marco Polo Umali responded and told Libot to lay down the bolo. But instead of heeding the order, Libot allegedly assaulted Umali who lost his balance and fell to the ground.

Libot then reportedly tried to hack the policeman who managed to shoot the attacker in the leg.

Police said attacker and his victims were taken to Doña Marta District Hospital, where Libot reportedly died of severe loss of blood.

Libot’s parents later told investigators that their son had a history of mental illness.

“The incident was one of his mental rages,” Encio said in a phone interview. /cbb
