Lawmaker shot 3 times

A member of Congress was shot and wounded by at least two men Sunday in a subdivision in Marikina City, police said.

Ranulfo Canonigo, representative of the party-list group Kakusa (Kapatiran ng mga Nakakulong na Walang Sala), which helps innocent people who have been accused of a crime and jailed, was rushed to St. Matthew’s Hospital in San Mateo, Rizal, after he was shot thrice.

Canonigo, 62, is vice chairman of the House committee on poverty alleviation.

Senior Superintendent Gabriel Lopez, Marikina police chief, said the incident happened at Fairlane Subdivision, Concepcion Uno village, Marikina City, at around 5 p.m. Canonigo was shot in the neck, back and leg.

“We still don’t know anything about his present condition, if he is critical or not,” Lopez said.

Canonigo was reportedly transferred to St. Luke’s Medical Center and would undergo surgery for his wounds.

Police have yet to establish a motive and obtain more details of the attack. Niña Calleja
