MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte paid his last respects to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Gov. Nestor Espenilla Jr. at the Heritage Park in Taguig City Tuesday night.

The late BSP governor’s wife, Maria Teresita, welcomed Duterte during his visit.

Espenilla succumbed to cancer on February 23.  He was 60.

Malacañang earlier expressed its condolences to the family of Espenilla as it hailed “the man once in charge of disciplining banks for his complete devotion to his work and great service to the nation.”

“This UP magna cum laude graduate was best remembered by the ordinary Juan de la Cruz for making financial services closer to Filipinos who – we are all aware – transact mostly using non-bank channels,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement. / gsg
