MANILA, Philippines – Appointive officials who would be campaigning for candidates should not be given their salaries, Commission on Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon proposed on Friday.

Guanzon said that such officials are “not doing their regular duties” when they attend campaign activities. As such, Guanzon said these officials should not receive salaries for that day.

“In my opinion, appointive officials who campaign for candidates should not receive a salary for that day of the campaign,” Guanzon said in a Twitter post.

“Because it means they were not doing their regular duties,” she added.

The commissioner, however, did not identify government officials who have campaigned for candidates. /muf
