BACOLOD CITY – A businessman was killed while his wife was wounded Tuesday night when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire at them inside the compound of the Redemptorist Church along B.S. Aquino Drive in Barangay 5, Bacolod City.

Alex Yao, 57, succumbed to at least three gunshot wounds on the left side of his chest and chin.

His wife, Maria Theresa, 56, was hit in the left hand, said Insp. Florentino Abalayan, deputy chief of Station 2.

Police investigation showed that the Yaos just came from Mass with fellow members of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos, a Catholic charismatic group.

They were about to leave the church compound on their white vehicle past 8:30 p.m. when a gunman in a black ball cap, mask and black jacket, appeared outside the driver’s seat, and shot them, Abalayan said.

The gunman was on a motorcycle driven by another person wearing a jacket and a red helmet, he said.

The couple was rushed to the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital but Alex was declared dead on arrival about 9:30 p.m. /cbb
