MANILA, Philippines – Six months after, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio remained Senator Panfilo Lacson’s top choice to be the country’s next president.
“I said this before, sometime in August last year and I’ll say it again – speaking of Mayor Sara Duterte, if the next leader of our country would emerge from the young, fresh, and new faces in national politics, my top choice right now is Sara Duterte,” the senator said in a text message on Tuesday.

Lacson, however, clarified that his statement was only based on his “own analysis and observation, being a part of Philippine politics for almost two decades.”
“In fact, we have yet to see or hear any other young, fresh and new personality emerging as a probable next leader,” he added.
“Nobody has declared, not even Mayor Sara, so it may sound presumptuous, even improper for me to throw my support or endorse her,” added Lacson when asked anew if he would support Sara’s possible presidential run in 2022.
In an interview on Monday, the Davao City mayor said he would decide by January 2021 whether or not she would run for president in 2022.
“‘Yung pagtakbo kasi ng presidente hindi ‘yan overnight na decision (Running for president is not an overnight decision),” Duterte-Carpio told reporters in an interview in Vigan City, Ilosocs Sur.
“It needs money, machinery at pinaka importante sa lahat yung wisdom at guidance ng Panginoon. Siguro gawa nalang tayo ng deadline, January of 2021,” she added.
