European Union hails peaceful BOL plebiscite, vows sustained support

MANILA, Philippines – The European Union (EU) on Thursday congratulated the Philippine government, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for a “generally peaceful” Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) plebiscite last February 6.

EU Ambassador Franz Jessen issued the statement a day after the second phase of the BOL plebiscite in Lanao del Norte and 39 barangays in six towns in North Cotabato.

“Congratulations to the Philippine Government, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Commission on Elections for the generally peacefulconduct of the second phase of the Bangsamoro Organic Law plebiscite on 6 February 2019 in Lanao del Norte’s and North Cotabato’s towns and villages,” Jessen said in a statement.

Jessen said the EU is looking continue to support the implementation of the BOL for long-lasting peace and prosperity in Mindanao.

“Looking forward to continue to support the implementation of the Bangsamoro Organic Law towards long-lasting peace, development and prosperity for the benefit of Mindanao and the Filipino people,” he said.

The Comelec earlier said that the second round of voting for the BOL ratification was generally peaceful and orderly. / gsg
