MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Region II will conduct an investigation on the murder of National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant Randy Felix Malayao.
“As it is necessary to know the truth, CHR-Region II shall be investigating the case in recognition of the primacy of a person’s right to life and in helping make perpetrators accountable for this crime,” CHR Spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said in a statement on Wednesday.
Malayao was at a bus stop in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya when an unidentified gunman boarded the bus and shot the sleeping victim.
CHR expressed alarm over the manner of Malayao’s killing, and noted that “voices of opposition and human rights groups are tagged as enemies.”
“The Commission on Human Rights is alarmed with the killing of Randy Malayao, an activist and known peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines,” Guia said.
“His death comes at a time when voices of opposition and human rights groups are tagged as enemies, making them possible subjects of assaults,” she added. /kga
