22 aspirants vie for SC Associate Justice vacant seat
MANILA, Philippines–There are 22 names vying to fill the Supreme Court Associate Justice position that became vacant with the promotion of now Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin.
Aspirants for the position include Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Deputy Commissioner Lanee Cui-David, a former lawyer of Janet Lim-Napoles; former Ateneo Law Dean Cesar Villanueva; academician Atty. Jeremy Gatdula and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez.
Aside from the four, there are 15 Court of Appeals Justices also vying for the posts, two Sandiganbayan Justices and a justice from the Court of Tax Appeals.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) which is constitutionally tasked to vet the nominees for the Judiciary and the Ombudsman will have its first deliberation on Thursday, Jan. 31.
Bersamin was appointed Chief Justice on November last year following the retirement of Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo De Castro. /muf
