Hontiveros to AFP, PNP: Bring Jolo bombers to justice

MANILA, Philippines – Opposition Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Monday urged the military and the police “to do everything” to bring to justice those responsible for the Jolo bombing.

She also called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to prevent similar atrocities.

“I urge the AFP and the PNP to do everything to bring the perpetrators of this atrocity to justice, and to make sure that no similar threats will again endanger the safety of our people, not only in Mindanao, but in the whole country as well,” Hontiveros said in a statement.

Hontiveros said she hoped that the attack would not “derail or thwart” the country’s success in efforts for lasting, genuine and just peace in Mindanao, referring to the recent ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law.

“We must not let any act of violence stop us from working as one nation for the cause of peace and progress for all,” she said.

The senator condemned the bombing of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral in the “strongest possible terms,” adding that nothing could justify such a “merciless, barbaric and diabolical attack.”

“My heart goes out to the families of those who suddenly lost their loved ones in this appalling event,” she said.

Last Sunday, two explosions hit the cathedral in Jolo while Mass was being celebrated, leaving at least 20 dead and 81 others injured.

Security officials have already placed the province under lockdown to ensure safety within the area and as investigators probe on the bombings.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack, issuing a formal communique saying two suicide bombers detonated explosive belts inside the church and its car park. /cbb
