Janitor’s appeal: Help my son beat leukemia

As a fisherman in Albay province, Nino Bazar had a lot of trouble earning a living, prompting him to bring his family to Metro Manila in 2010.

But five years after their transfer, Bazar’s son, Jake Emmanuel, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, forcing the boy to drop out of school for three years.

Although he is now 11 years old, Jake is only in the second grade.

“I really don’t know if the environment had something to do with his ailment. But I told my wife, Benjie, that if we were to go back to the province where life is simpler, more peaceful and the air is clean, my daily pay will not be enough,” Bazar said.

He and his family now live in Novaliches, Quezon City. As a janitor and building caretaker, Bazar earns P10,000 a month which, along with Sen. Loren Legarda’s financial assistance, helped pay for his son’s 14-cycle chemotherapy.

“But there is an election ban right now on the disbursement of public funds so we have no one to turn to. We need P25,400 because my son needs to undergo a bone marrow test (worth P14,000), a CT scan (P8,000), a 2D-Echo (P2,600) and buy his maintenance medicine of Cytospin (P800),” he said.
