Phivolcs records 5.0-magnitude earthquake off Cagayan

Phivolcs records 5.0-magnitude earthquake off Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5 earthquake struck off the coast of Cagayan on Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs traced the quake’s epicenter at 49 kilometers northwest of Calayan in Cagayan province.

It also said the earthquake, which hit the area around 4:34 p.m., was of tectonic origin and has a depth of seven kilometers.

Pasuquiin, Ilocos Norte felt the quake at Intensity IV; Cervantes and Sinait in Ilocos Sur at Intensity III; Peñablanca, Cagayan at Intensity II; while Vigan City felt it at Intensity I, according to Phivolcs.

No damages could be expected from the earthquake, but Phivolcs warned aftershocks might occur. /kga
