Lahar advisory raised over Mt. Bulusan
LEGAZPI CITY—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has advised communities living around Bulusan volcano to be vigilant and ready as rains brought by Tropical Depression “Amang” could trigger lahar flow and flash floods.
“Prolonged and heavy rainfall may cause excessive erosion of existing pyroclastic deposits in the upper slopes of Bulusan Volcano,” said the Phivolcs advisory on Monday.
The erosion of deposits may trigger lahar in Bulusan rivers in the southeastern, southwestern and northeastern portions of the volcano, Phivolcs noted.
Communities living near the volcano in Irosin and Juban towns may be affected by lahar flow, the Phivolcs said.
Prior to the advisory, about 20 families from Barangay Puting Sapa in Juban have been evacuated Sunday due to possible flooding and landslide.
