An environmental watchdog organization has joined the recent viral internet “10-year challenge” to step up its calls on combating the worsening plastic pollution problem.
World Wide Fund (WWF)- Philippines shared on Facebook photos of a used plastic bottle, which can be seen unchanged throughout the years, to show the continuing effects of plastic pollution on the environment.
“#2008vs2018 and it’s almost unchanged! 😮 #HowHardDidAgingHitYou #10YearChallenge,” the WWF-Philippines wrote on its caption.
“It can take hundreds of years for a single piece of plastic to decompose,” the organization added.
Last week, the “10-year challenge’ took social media by storm where it asks users to post two photos, one from 10 years ago and one from present, with a caption “how did aging hit you?”.
The WWF-Philippines then urged people to join #AyokoNgPlastic movement and help in addressing the ecological problem.
“Plastic pollution is a problem we all need to address and you can be part of the solution. Join the #AyokoNgPlastik movement, today: fb.com/groups/AyokoNgPlastik,” it concluded.
According to environment group Greenpeace, the Philippines is one of the world’s worst plastic polluters of oceans. It added that an equivalent of one truckload of plastic ends up at sea every minute all over the world. /cbb
