Trillanes camp mulls appeal of Makati court ruling

MANILA, Philippines — After a Makati court upheld its arrest order against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, his camp said it will consider appealing the ruling before the higher courts.

“We have yet to see the ruling of the Court so we cannot comment on the supposed basis of the denial of our motion,” lawyer Reynaldo Robles, legal counsel of Trillanes, said in a statement on Monday.

“Needless to state, we will consider the possibility of appealing or questioning the ruling before the higher courts,” he added.

Earlier, the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 150 denied the motion for reconsideration filed by the senator after the court issued an arrest warrant against him for his rebellion case in connection with the 2007 Manila Peninsula siege.

In dismissing the motion, the court said Trillanes failed to raise new issues that would warrant a reversal of a September 25, 2018 order issued by Makati RTC Branch 150 Judge Elmo Alameda.

Alameda ruled that that there was “factual and legal basis” for the Proclamation No. 572 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte revoking the amnesty given to Trillanes by then President Benigno Aquino III.

Aquino’s amnesty led to the dismissal of the rebellion case against the senator in 2011.

“With the revocation of the amnesty to Sen. Trillanes, the resulting consequence is that the Order issued on September 7, 2011 dismissing the case of rebellion becomes void ab initio,” the court stated. /ee
