Surigao del Sur radioman escapes slay try — NUJP

DAVAO CITY — A radio broadcaster survived an attack by unidentified gunmen in Tago town, Surigao del Sur on Friday, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) reported on Saturday.

Jose Salinas Pimentel was on board a motorcycle on his way home after his radio program when shot by two unidentified gunmen, also on a motorcycle, Kath Cortez of the NUJP Eastern Mindanao media safety office, said.

Judith Suarez, NUJP Tandag director, said the incident happened along the national highway in Purok (Community) Manga II, Barangay Purisima at 6:10 p.m.

Pimentel, 49, managed to escape from the slay attempt and has remained calm despite the ordeal.

Pimentel, who hosts a current affairs program over 100.7 FM Radyo Bandera Philippines in Tandag City, is known for his hard-hitting commentaries against local politicians, Suarez told the Inquirer by phone.

“The victim has been traumatized and is in hiding,” Suarez said.
