Today, Dec. 28, is the 40th death anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Hernando R. Ocampo.
Born on April 28, 1911 in Sta. Cruz, Manila, he was a self-taught painter whose abstract works left an indelible mark on Philippine modern art.
His notable work, “Genesis,” served as the basis for the curtain design of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ main theater. He died in 1978 in Caloocan City, and was posthumously named national artist in 1991.
