LOOK: Groups stage protest outside Congress vs martial law extension

MANILA, Philippines — Members of progressive groups on Wednesday staged a protest rally outside the gates of the House of Representatives just as the joint session of Congress approved the extension of martial law until December 2019.

Members of the Makabayan bloc including Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate, Anakpawis Rep. Ariel Casilao updated the protesters from Kilusang Mayo Uno, Anakbayan, and other groups on what transpired inside the plenary session.

There were 223 House members who voted to extend the martial law in Mindanao, while 23 voted against it. Twelve senators voted yes, four voted no, and one abstained.

According to officials from the administration, President Rodrigo Duterte requested for an extension as rebellion still exists in the southern region. Mindanao was originally placed under martial law after terrorists from the Maute Group and the Abu Sayyaf Group occupied Marawi City in Lanao del Sur. /ee
